1. -- Inside the Duffel --
Use small plastic grocery bags or cloth 'mini duffel' bags inside your child's duffel or suitcase for them to fill up with dirty clothes. This way, clean clothes stay separate and fresh and do not get wet from having dirty clothes thrown in on top of them. This idea really DOES work!

2. -- Practice Packing --
Set out clothes and let your child PACK THEIR OWN GEAR.

3. -- Sleeping Bag --
Have your child practice (several times!) rolling up and fastening the straps on their sleeping bag or bed roll.

4. -- Organization --
Letting your child HELP organize their own gear provides them with "ownership" of the process.

Every year we return to Winston with a large collection of "unclaimed" clothing, flashlights, cameras, CD Players, sandals, sneakers -- the list goes on and on. Please help us on this one by at the very least putting your child's initials on each item so we can return the "lost and found" item to the correct owner!

Bathing suit, towel, sandals, sunscreen, bug repellant go "up top" where students sit on the bus.

Dr. Yun Sun (our trip doctor) will be handling all medical issues during the trip including the dispensing of medication. Mrs. Taylor will be assisting. When you arrive at Hanes on Saturday, please deliver all medications to Mrs. Taylor. Students may keep inhalers with them. An additional sheet of information will be mailed to you concerning medications. We carry most over-the-counter medications with us, so keep those at home. DO SEND prescription medications with directions on how often it should be administered and which meal time would be best for taking it.

Don't believe your child when they tell you they just HAVE to take two or three bags of cookies, several pounds of chewing gum, and various other "essential" candy snacks in order to "survive" the trip. (If they bring too much we'll just have to 'hold it' for them until they get back to Winston.) We know that most kids have a 'sweet tooth,' but really, nutritionally, they don't NEED IT! Adult chaperones get particularly tired of trying to get students to pick up candy wrappers, gum wrappers, drink bottles, empty cookie bags, etc. that get tossed to the floor during the long bus ride. Help us out here by LIMITING the amount of junk food that your child brings along. Remember, they don't REALLY need all that stuff! AND, students are NOT allowed to buy sodas or snack foods at Interstate rest stops along the way.

Disposable cameras are the perfect "bullet proof" photography solution for students to use in taking pictures of their adventures during the Keys Trip. These cameras work well in low light and bright light, are rugged, and yield excellent prints. We don't recommend digital cameras -- they are too expensive and delicate -- and besides, they don't survive very well when subjected to salt spray and rough handling. So, go with cheap disposables. Satisfaction guaranteed.

Just in case your child loses the one tube or bottle of sunscreen that you have included (SPF 35+), you might want to include a second one. It's very bright in Florida and the water acts like a mirror, bouncing additional UV rays onto students. Three days is NOT enough time to get a tan. Without lots of sunscreen, they will only burn, so we try to get students to exercise extra caution when they are out in the sun on boat trips and labs. (Please do NOT send spray bottles of sunscreen!)

As you can see from the picture to the left taken last year on our Saturday departure date, the Hanes bus parking lot is full of people, gear, and buses. Please DO NOT park in the large bus parking lot. There is not enough room for buses to turn around if cars are in the way. Instead, plan on parking in the parking lot beside the Hanes gym and walking over to the bus parking lot. Once the buses arrive, students may get on the bus (boys on Buses #1, girls on Bus #2) to "stow" their carry on luggage and then they have to get off the bus and wait for the final roll call.
