Darren Sproles leads Chargers to Overtime win over Colts

Darren Sproles lines up behind Philip Rivers in the I formation. Rivers drops back and hands it off to Sproles. He finds open space and brings it all the way. "Touchdown Chargers! They have won the game!" the announcer says.
Darren Sproles, who scored the game winning touchdown, rushed 22 times for 105 yards and 5 catches for 45 yards. He rushed for 2 Touchdowns and that game-winning touchdown run was his longest run of the game. Sproles, also a kick and punt returner, gained a total of 328 all-purpose yards. Even with good performances from QB Philip Rivers, Tight End Antonio Gates, and RB LaDainian Tomlinson, the Chargers wouldn't have won the game without Darren Sproles.
The Colts, in a losing effort, had a pretty good game. QB Peyton Manning and Wide Receivers Reggie Wayne and Anthony Gonzalez had great games. But in the end, the Colts couldn't stop Darren Sproles, which is the reason they lost the game and the Chargers are playing the Pittsburgh Steelers instead of them.

Bengals Tie Eagles
The Cincinnati Bengals (1-8-1) and the Philidelphia Eagles (5-4-1) played to a 13-13 tie, the NFL's first tie since November 10, 2002.

Shayne Graham missed a 47 yard field goal wide right with seven seconds left in overtime that could have won the game for the Bengals. The tie was well fitting for the two teams, who both played a very bad game. Both teams had three posessions in overtime, but the Bengals were the only team that could get close enough for a field goal attempt.
Donavon McNabb of the Eagles had a fumble and threw three interceptions in the game, his personal high. He was 28 for 58 in passing, and the Eagles passed on all 18 of their third downs, including third-and-ones. They completed 3 of those 18 passes. In the first half, the Eagles defense made up for Donavon McNabb's fumble by making a stand and stopping the Bengal's offense at the 1 yard line. Sav Rocca, the punter of the Eagles, shanked three punts in the matchup.

Ryan Fitzpatrick of the Bengals was 29/44 on passing for 261 yds and 1 touchdown. T.J. Houshmandzadeh had 12 receptions for 149 yds and caught 1 TD.

Donavon McNabb didn't know that regular season games ended in a tie. He thought they went on until someone scored in OT.

Wake Forest Beats Virginia and Becomes Bowl Eligible
Wake Forest, after an amazing game against Virginia, becomes bowl eligable and takes second place in the Atlantic ACC division. This is a good sign, seeing they are playing good teams the rest of the season. The entire Wake Forest team played well, and that helped them win the game.

In the first quarter, Wake Forest got off to a good start and didn't allow Virginia to score. Wake drove all the way down the field and scored a touchdown off a completion from Riley Skinner to TE Ben Wooster from 2 yards out. The next possession, the Wake Forest defense played astounding and forced and recovered a fumble. Then, the next Virginia possession, Boo Robinson picked off a pass from Marc Verica. A few plays later, Riley Skinner threw a 58 yard strike to Devon Brown for a score. 14-0 Wake at the end of the first quarter.

The second quarter started, and Virginia scored an early field goal to put them only down 11. The next drive, Wake's RB Brandon Pendergrass scored a one yard running strike. Then, the next drive, Marc Verica again was picked off and this time SS Kevin Patterson returned it to the touchdown. The extra point made, Wake Forest took a 28-3 lead early.

The third quarter began, and not much happened. There was no scoring, and both teams were forced to punt once or twice each. Virginia got close to scoring, but on 4th down on the Wake Forest 6 yard line, they lost yards and turned the ball over. That was most of the action that went on in the third quarter.

In the 4th quarter, Virginia tried to get back in the game. They first scored of a pass from Marc Verica to John Phillips for a 21 yard strike. Then Virginia struck again from 5 yards, a pass from Verica to Kevin Ogletree. That ended all scoring in the game. Wake Forest's defense pulled together and stopped the Virginia offense from getting back in the game. Wake's LB Stanley Arnoux picked off Verica and the game ended at 28-17 Wake over Virginia. For Wake, the top offensive preformers where QB Riley Skinner, RB Brandon Pendergrass, WR Devon Brown, and TE Ben Wooster. For Virginia, QB Marc Verica, WR Kevin Ogletree, and TE John Phillips. On the defense for Wake, DT Boo Robinson, LB Stanley Arnoux, and SS Kevin Patterson all caught a interception. LB Aaron Curry recovered a Virginia fumble. That were the key preformers for both teams in this good matchup between to ACC teams.

Pistons Trade to Denver
Recently the Detroit Pistons agreed to trade guard, Chauncey Billups, power forward, Antonio McDyess, and center, Cheick Samb in exchange for one of the greatest players in the game, Allen Iverson. Chauncey Billups led his team to the NBA Finals in 2004, won, and was named Most Valuable Player of the Finals. Him and Antonio will definitely be a huge loss for the Pistons. Billups was a starter and Antonio a strong 6th man. Although on the other hand, Allen Iverson will be playing for the Pistons and he has proven that he can play at a higher level of competition at only 6 feet tall. He has previously averaged 33 points per game in some seasons and has also been a strong defensive player for Denver.

Both Chauncey and Allen have played in All-Star games but Iverson has rarely had many other great teammates, unlike Chauncey Billups who had on his team previously, Richard Hamilton, Tayshaun Prince, Rasheed Wallace, and Ben Wallace. Iverson has clearly proven to be able to be a team leader even in bad circumstances. We'll just have to see how Chauncey Billups can do in Denver and if Iverson can lead the Pistons to be one of the greatest NBA franchises.

Tennessee Titans Stay Perfect
Tennessee stays perfect after an overtime win against Green Bay. This game was decided by a field goal by Tennessee kicker Rob Bironas from 41 yards. The game was a game that kickers were one of the most important players. But in the end, Green Bay couldn't stop the Tennessee offense and that put them at 4-4. The score was 19-16.

In the first quarter, not much went on. Green Bay got the ball first, and they punted it after a 3 and out. When Tennessee got the ball, they drove down the field and kicked a 31 yard field goal, which was good. Green Bay started with the ball at the 20 after a touchback. They drove down to the Tennessee 44 but it was fourth down. They tried to make the fourth down, but an incomplete pass made the Packers turnover the ball. Then Tennessee got the ball back with good field position. By the end of the first quarter, the Titans were on the Green Bay 15 yard line.

After a few seconds in the second quarter, the Titans made a field goal and put them up 6-0. When the Packers got the ball, they drove and made a field goal to get back in the game. Titans went 3 and out and punted it to the Packers. After starting on their own 29, Aaron Rodgers led the Packers down the field and threw a touchdown to Donald Driver from 5 yards. After the PAT, the Packers had an 10-6 lead. After recieving the ball, Titans Running Back LenDale White ran 54 yards to set up a touchdown. RB Chris Johnson scored that touchdown, and put the Titans back up 13-10 with the PAT. Green Bay needed to score, but they didn't succeed in that. On the Titans 38, they went for it on fourth down and again failed. Titans got the ball with 20 seconds left, and let time run out.

After halftime, Tennessee recieved the ball. They were forced to punt and gave Green Bay a chance to come back. Aaron Rodgers, though, threw an interception in the end zone that was picked off by Chris Hope. The Titans again are forced to punt the ball into Packer territory. Then Aaron Rodgers fumbled and was picked up by Stephen Tulloch on the Green Bay 17. The Titans offense studdered and Rob Bironas made a field goal to put them up, 16-10. Green Bay responded by driving straight down the field and made a field goal to put them down by 3. After a 8 yard run by Chris Johnson, the third quarter came to a close.

At the begining of the fourth quarter, the Titans again punted the ball away. Green Bay again punts the ball back to the dangerous Titans offense. The Titans offense studdered, and punted it to the Packers. Then the Green Bay offense sparked and made a field goal to put the game at 16-16. After that, no one scored in the rest of the game. The Titans could have won it before the end of the game, but kicker Rob Bironas luck ran out for then and missed a 47 yarder with no time left. That brought an end to the game, 16-16, which sent it into overtime.

At the begining of OT, the Titans recieved the ball and drove all the way down the field with reliable RB Chris Johnson leading the way to the Green Bay 26, where Rob Bironas made the winning field goal which won the game for the Titans, 19-16. The QBs from both teams did well and led their teams to overtime. RB Chris Johnson and LenDale White led Tennessee in rushing with combined totals of 32 carries for 166 yards. RB Ryan Grant led the Packers with 20 carries for 86 yards. Chris Johnson also led Tennessee in receptions. Kicker Mason Crosby was 3/3 on field goals and 1/1 on PATs for the Packers. Kicker Rob Bironas was 4/5 on field goals and 1/1 on PATs for the Titans. Bironas was the man who won the game for the Titans. This exciting game was heart-stopping and kept the Tennessee Titans hopes up, and brought down the early-good Green Bay Packers.

Dallas Cowboys losing it?
Dallas, after losing two weeks ago to the Arizona Cardinals, lose again to the now 2-4 St. Louis Rams. Without Tony Romo because of injury, Dallas didn't get their offense on task at all during the game. After scoring early, Dallas couldn't score any more until the fourth quarter. Star Running Back Marion Barber didn't spark in the game, with only 100 yards in 18 carries and only one touchdown. Starting QB Brad Johnson, replacing Tony Romo, didn't have a good game. He completed 17 of 34 for 234 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions. WRs Terrell Owens and Martellus Bennett and TE Jason Witten were not all on their game, but Bennett scored a touchdown in the fourth quarter. Well, on the other side of the ball, St. Louis QB Marc Bulger had a fabulous game. He was 14 of 19 for 173 yards, a touchown and no interceptions against the very talented Cowboy's defense. Running Back Steven Jackson had a fabulous game for once this year. He had 25 carries for 160 yards, three touchdowns which included a 56 yarder. WRs Donnie Avery and Torry Holt both had good games. Avery had the lone touchdown catch of the day, a 40 yarder from Marc Bulger, and Holt had a 20 yard catch. Two interceptions were caught by Line Backer Will Witherspoon and one by Free Safety Oshiomogho Atogwe. The Rams made the Cowboys look like they weren't even there. Rams win, 34-14.

Hanes Lady Dragons Soccer Conquer the County

The Hanes Girls soccer team went undefeated for thier whole fall season this year! The Hanes team ended Jefferson's 6 YEAR winning streak by beating them 1-0!!!

For the first 5 or so games Hanes played by a rule that stated that they couldn't beat the opposing team by more than 5 points, but then they figured out that it was just a courtesy rule and they didn't have to follow it. Gennerally, that would be fine; except for the fact that we were afraid it would come down to goal count for the champoinship, since Meadowlark was undefeated as well. Luckily, it didn't come down to that and Hanes and Medowlark were co-champions.

Wake Forest Men's Soccer vs. UNCG
Tuesday, October 14 the Demon Deacons took on UNCG in men's soccer. In the first 10 minutes of the game Ike Opara headed Jamie Franks corner kick into the back of the net. Less than 3 minutes later Arnoux shot 17 yards away from the goal and racked up another point for the Deacs. Wake managed to keep the ball on thier side of the field for most of the game and 53 seconds before the half was up Zack Schilawski scored. At the intermission the Deacons were up by 3 and the crowd was pumped! At the beginning of the second half the only starter that was playing was the goalie, but yet we put two more goals in before the end of the game. One of these was by Arnoux and the other was smashed in by Sam Cronin, and assisted by Arnoux. The final score was 6-0 and the Deacons and their fans went home feeling fantastic!

Notre Dame stays strong and defeats Stanford

This past week Notre Dame pulled off a win against rivals Stanford. Two interceptions by Safety David Bruton and Defensive End Pat Kuntz brought and end to two drives in field goal range for the Cardinals. After converting the first one into a touchdown, Notre Dame held a 7-0 lead. Another pick came later in the game by Safety Kyle McCarthy on the Cardinal's Tavi Pritchard. Tailback Armando Allen for Notre Dame scored 2 decisive touchdowns. QB Jimmy Clauson threw for 347 yards, completed 29 of 40, and threw for 3 touchdowns with only one sack. After Stanford's Toby Gerhart scored a 1 yard touchdown run, Notre Dame struck back. Jimmy made an amazing off his back foot throw 48 yards to Michael Floyd, who was wide open on the 3 of Stanford. The Fighting Irish ended holding off a 14 point comeback to win it 28-21. Rookie Tight End Kyle Rudolph caught the winning touchdown and has now scored against Purdue and Stanford.  This decisive win puts Notre Dame at 4-1, a very good record compared to last year. If Notre Dame stays at the top of their game, they can have another winning record under Charlie Weis.

Wake Forest Losing It?
Wake Forest Football

The ending whistle felt so good when Wake Forest "3-1" beat Ole Miss in the last three seconds with a 41 yard field goal from Sam Swank. The game had been so alive and Riley Skinner completing 32 of 43 passes and combining wonderfully with tight ends "DJ Boldin, and Brian Pendergrass." Riley Skinner found out at the end of the game that he had thrown for 267 yards and gave credit to his wide recievers for being able to catch the ball and make some big plays. After this event Jim Grobe had his team with high hopes for the Orange Bowl and they were all pumped up for the next game against Navy. The game was a disaster from the first minute when on third down he threw an interception which was later converted into a touchdown giving Wake Forest a 7-0 deficit. Riley Skinner threw 5 interceptions and to add to that he had 1 fumble. Skinner later said after the game that he had not played well and he had overthrown passes because he had forced them. He also stated that he felt bad for letting the team down and giving away so many turnovers which he had gotten the ball from because of the defense. After this defeat Wake Forest is taking on the Clemson Tigers (3-2) at 7:30 Thursday night on BB&T field and it will be televised on ESPN and you can also listen to it on the radio if you tune it to 98.1 for the ISP sports network.

Wake Forest NCSU
On Saturday at the Joel Coliseum, Wake Forest squares off with in-state rival NC State at 12:00 noon. Earlier in the year, NCSU beat Wake at the buzzer on a tip in dunk by Ben McCauly. Wake is bitter after losing 4 in-a-row after beating Duke. NCSU is at the bottom of the ACC and desperately needs a win. Center Chas McFarland of Wake is hot right now and last time shut down star center J.J Hickson of State. If he plays well that could be the difference. I am looking forward to a good game and strong play from both sides. Hope to see you guys at the Joel!

Duke Dying?

We all know that Mike Krzyzewski's Duke Blue Devils were first in the ACC for most of this season with a record of 22-1 and the best start in Duke history. But on February 17, Duke came into Winston-Salem at number 2 by the AP poll. Wake Forest came in shooting and led by as many as 16 toward the end. Duke made a bit of a run, but Wake came back to smash them in front of a capacity crowd. To make matters worse for the Devils; all five starters fouled out. Also two freshman on the ACC's youngest team combined to produce 50 points in their teams effort. Final score 86-73 Deacs.

Then Duke headed down to Miami four days later to try and right the wrongs against the Demon Deacons. Miami came out and played their hardest as well. Towards the end of that game Jack McClinton and Jason Collins took over scoring a combined 46 points. Duke was in a hopeless position as they were down four with 3 seconds to go. Duke star two-gaurd DeMarcus Nelson hit a meaningless three pointer a few feet short of half court; there were only 1.6 seconds to play and Duke down one. Enough time for Coach K right? WRONG! Miami got the ball downcourt and burned out the clock. How could it be that Duke, mighty Duke had dropped two in a row to unranked ACC teams? Final score 96-95 'Canes.

ESPN's Stephen A. Smith says that late February is the time when teams come together or fall apart. And you have to start wondering if Duke is the latter. Duke returns to action Saturday 2/23 agaisnt non-conference St. John's at four o'clock.

Wake Upsets (former) #2 Duke
Last night, the Wake Forest Demon Deacons beat the Duke Blue Devils 86-73 in a terrific game led by freshman Jeff Teague with 26 points.  James Johnson, also a freshman, had 24 points.  Chas McFarland got a technical foul early in the first half and later fouled out, opening up the center position to sophmore Jamie Skeen who scored 10 points.  This was Duke's  first ACC loss, and only their second loss over all.  Their starting 5 players all fouled out, and the Deacs held Greg Paulus, considered Duke's best player, to only 7 points.  On the impact of the win, shooting guard Jeff Teague said, "If we just keep getting wins, especially on the road, I think we could make it to the NCAA tournament."  Obviously, the Wake Forest players were quite "pumped" about this win, and the crowd was, too, seeing as they stormed the court right after the final buzzer.  After the game, Deacon fans headed to the quad to give it a good toilet paper rolling as a congratulations to their team on this great home win.
