Boat Races -- Tuesday, June 5th
boat_logo-2012c

Sixth grade students have been studying density and buoyancy in their Earth Science classes. They were challenged to create a “boat” out of recycled plastic bottles that would float one or two of their team. Twenty-one boats ranging from kickboards to surfboards, rafts to miniature islands, and canoes to rowboats are now ready to race down the length of the Chadwick pool Tuesday, June 5th at 1:00 pm.

This is your invitation to come and watch the fun. In addition to students and their families and friends, the event is open to Chadwick faculty and staff as well as other Village, Middle School, and Upper School classes at Chadwick.

Bottle Boats Due Monday, May 21

Bottle boats are due Monday, May 21st by 8:00 pm. Mr. Clauset will have the classroom open and will be waiting for your boat to arrive Monday after school.

Students should help parents load and unload the boats Monday afternoon and evening. All boats will be stored in the classroom. Each boat will have a duct tape "tag" attached to the boat to identify the name of the boat and the team members who created it.

The boats will be on display for Open House Thursday night, May 24th. The boat races will take place at 1:00 pm on Tuesday, June 5th.

Earth Day 2012
insect

April 22 will mark Earth Day worldwide, an event now in its 42nd year and observed in 175 countries.

The original grass-roots environmental action helped spur the Clean Water Act and Clean Air Act in the United States. Gathered here are 35 images of our planet's environment, efforts to utilize renewable alternative sources of energy, and the effects of different forms of pollution.

The Great Float-Your-Boat Challenge
floatyourboat2012Deadline: MAY 23rd

Challenge: Build a boat made out of recycled plastic bottles that can be raced by one or two of your team members the length of the pool at Chadwick using only hands or legs or paddles for locomotion.

Boat Turn-in Deadline: Monday morning – Mr. Clauset’s science classroom -- May 23

Boat Race: Tuesday morning, June 5

Teams: 2 to 4 people per team (1-2 people in the boat on race day)

Awards to be Presented: 1st, 2nd, 3rd place for Fastest Boat, Junk Yard Award, Best Dressed Team, Titanic Award, Craziest Design

Creative problem-solving is the name of the game. Whether you get your creative insights from methodical effort or from wide-ranging trail-and-error, building a plastic bottle boat can be -- no, make that, will be -- both fun and challenging.

Start with a design idea, a vision of what you want your creation to look like. But consider this first -- it doesn't have to be a boat at all! It can be any design you like or want to try out. Create a drawing or two BEFORE you start construction.

Amazing Photos of the Sun
cme

Click on the picture above or this LINK to go to a Time Magazine photo gallery of recent pictures taken by NASA of solar flares on the sun. Amazing!

In this picture coronal loops extend some 60,000 miles away from the surface of the sun. The arches begin to form when plasma heats up and crashes down. Some scientists calculate that coronal temperatures may be 300 times hotter than the surface of the sun.

NASA has a great web site with VIDEOS showing sunspot activity.

Accelerometer Lab Photo Gallery

Click on the picture above or this LINK to go to the photo gallery of our accelerometer lab where we used motion sensors similar to the ones used to detect earthquakes in California. These sensors are provided by the California Quake Catcher Live Network. Students first experimented with the bounces of different balls on a table top. Then they used the USB-connected accelerometer to see a graphical representation (on x, y, and z scales) of the table top vibrations created by the same five balls. Finally, they were given three challenges in which they tried to figure out how to replicate a printed graphical representation of the sensor movement in x, y, and z planes with a special movement of the sensor above or on the table top.

Earthquake Lab Pictures Photo Gallery

Click on the picture above or this LINK to go to the latest photo collection on our Earthquake Lab. Students pulled a sandpaper-covered sled over a sandpaper strip to simulate the strike-slip motion of earthquakes. Sugar cube buildings were placed on top of the sled to simulate the effect of earthquakes on buildings. A rubber band was connected to the sled to determine the potential energy force needed to begin the "earthquake" series. Data was collected on each "run" and averages were taken. The goal of the lab was for students to be able to investigate the relative force needed to produce earthquakes.

CIMI Audio Podcasts Now Available
CIMIpodcasts

Click on the picture above or this LINK to go to the CIMI podcasts player. There are 59 audio files -- one from each student in the class -- that cover all aspects of our 2011 CIMI trip.

Students wrote and recorded stories about day snorkeling, night snorkeling, snorkel games, the Hall of Mammals, the terrestrial hike, the astronomy hike, the sunrise hike, the invertebrate lab, the shark lab, the algae lab, kayaking, the climbing wall, the creatures of the night lab, and free time.

To develop their podcasts students learned how to record audio files on mp3 players using high quality stereo microphones, how to transfer those files from the players to our laptop computers, and finally, how to use audio editing software to clean up and publish their finished stories to our classroom network. Once the files were collected on our classroom server, they were uploaded to the web for your enjoyment.
